Maintaining the town

The issue of the town needing a maintanance code has come up. I've always been depressed by the blight and poorly kept properties on our main roads. I'm not talking old paint, because paint is an issue that is easy to fix. I'm talking about buildings falling down, junk appliances, trash and other issues that affect our town. The houses that you see coming into the town from 40 over the Falling River are particularly bad.

I see that there are now citizens that want something done about the blight, but my question is: Why did it have to get this far, before something was done?

I also have a question for you concerning the roads. Who maintained, patched the roads in Brookneal lately? And who made the decision?

I am a motorcycle rider, the roads have been "patched" with loose gravel. To a biker, this could kill you or do massive damage to you very rapidly if you don't know this ahead of time. Is there any concern for safety around your town? Main street has been bad for at least 10 years now, maybe more.

So who decides this??? Is this another Mr Crews decision of how to repair???

I would have to believe that the gravel patches were done by the town (Crews, I refuse to call him Mr.)

VDOT always puts a warning sign out for bikers WARNING LOOSE GRAVEL AHEAD

The town is not concerned about anyone but themselves unless a lawsuit is involved.

"The houses that you see coming into town from 40 over Falling River are particularly bad." One of those houses is mine and I resent that comment. The highway right-of-way is cut and free of saplings and trash. My family has lived in this town since 1910 and no one has ever made such a comment about our property!

Unless you're living in one of the houses right next to the road that has the piles of logs, trash and broken appliances then the comment wasn't about your house. So you have no reason to be offended.

Yes, Brookneal Baptist Church property is a blight to Falling River hill and the entrance to Brookneal from 40.
Watch broad generalizations.

Brookneal Baptist Church isn't a house, in case you hadn't noticed.

Brookneal Baptist Church is a house of God and a house of worship. That qualifies it as a house.

Oh good grief! So what do you consider an outhouse?

So the right of way is clean, but is your yard a mess? I know the houses Brookneal blogger is referring to, they look like crap. There is one house in particular where the yard looks like a junkyard. I've thought about stopping and placing a sign out that says "Sanford & Son", at least that way maybe it would drum up some tourist business.

Seriously, if your yard is fairly clean then you should not take offense. I'm guessing that it must not be and that's why you have.

And please, no more ignorant comments about Brookneal Baptist being a house. Just clean up your own yard so your place resembles one!

Now we got the "biker" crybaby bloggin. What a joke. If you can ride that rice-a-roni junk you should be able to keep it 'shiny side" up ,boo-boo. If you wreck it you can still sell it for a boat anchor to some of your pretty boy buddies up at sml. I know you don't ride american metal 'cause no true BIKER would cry and moan about some of the petty crap that you seem to favor. I personally don't know but "your family" living in Brookneal since 1910 means nothing must mean you ought to be on the council or some other muckety muck pollywog job here.

the last comment came from me , boo boo.

I was only making a point that the town is not saftey concerned, and also that it was very bad work, anyone can throw gravel in a hole and scatter it.

" I know you don't ride american metal 'cause no true BIKER would cry and moan about some of the petty crap that you seem to favor."

You are right, I ride a real bike. Not an imitation. Made in Japan.

Not one that people claim to be made in the USA but is only running because of parts made in Japan. At least all of the parts on mine came from one place. Harley uses Japanese parts.

So you must be claiming that only a real Biker only rides a Victory and now Harley riders are not bikers either. Victory is the only "American Made Metal"

The fact still remains the same, that was crappy work that can hurt a biker. I have known fellow bikers (notice I mean more than one and some very experienced riders) that have died from loose gravel, bike slid out, cars ran right over them. Maybe if they were on a Japanese bike, they would still be alive.

Come on people, this blog is about the town, not the idiots that want to make stereotypical taunts at each other.

"Let's talk about our great little town and the businesses and people in it!"
I don't read much positive in this blog and when someone tries to point out positive areas or say something good, there is a negative response to the blog. Is this indicative of the town climate and the people in it?

My point was easily made, it only takes a little bait to draw out the foolishness of a rhetorical know it all. Tell us more , oh great punkin.

The point was made that you don't know what you were talking about....

you combined different people in your post..... I don't even live in your town my friend.

Sure.

Get out and vote, run for counsel or mayor. Clean up your little town and start with you local government.

Go to your counsel meetings and let them know what they have done to your town. Ask them where your tax money is going.

I don't live there. But I do know a lot of people there, probably know you also. Most of the ones that I know complain about what has become of your town.

Long time no blog. How the hell y'all doing? Did you hold elections yet? Run the varmints out of town a rail or just re-elect them and keep on with the status quo?

Loose gravel sucks no matter what brand bike you ride. Yep, I'm a biker. Been riding for 33 years and I have ridden an 'American Made' bike. Too expensive, too loud, too slow. I ride a classic motorcycle. '83 V65 Magna. Mr Ricearoni, I'd be more than happy to race you for pink slips if you think your H-D is somehow better than. :-)

Lets get back to maintaining the town.
It appears that Mr. Jennings has done an admirable job in cleaning up his property behind the cemetery. Of course I understand that this was at the instance of Mr. Crews in letters that were sent out.
It also seems that Mr. Jean has done the same at his business location, also as stated in the demand via letter from Mr. Crews.
(There remains a bit more to do at each place, but overall, a great improvement.)

Here's the puzzling part; When you travel from Mr. Jennings' property on Williams St. over to Mr. Jeans business on Lynchburg Ave. you can't help but see Mr. Adam's property between the Library and the Bank of Charlotte, but, I see absolutely no work being done there.
With a time limit of 15 days to clean up or be fined, or have the town clean it up and send you the bill, either Mr. Adams didn't get a letter or he's ignoring it.
Either way someone is not doing their job.
If Mr. Crews didn't send a letter to Mr. Adams, then he's being selective in whom he sends them to and this could be the case since Mr. Adams (as does the Mayor) seems to think that Mr. Crews is capable of walking on water.
Or, it could be that Mr. Adams thinks he's special and doesn't have to conform to the rules as do others in the town.

Personally, if I were sent a letter, when probably the most unsightly building in town's owner had not received one, or if he simply didn't bother adhering to the demands of such letter, I'd certainly have to file a discrimination charge against the town.

Actually Mr. Adams personal residence reflects his lack of concern to clean up anything he owns. Gutters torn off the screened porch on the left (the whole porch seems to be in dire need of overhaul)and just an overall junky looking appearance period!
This sort of neglect is how some of the nicest homes in Brookneal have receeded into slum palaces.
They reach the point of no return, as is the case with his business, leaving demolition as the only economically viable option.
Lets see if he gets off his can and falls in line with the others.
"ALL" of Council needs to clean up before they can expect the rest of the town to do so.

*A personal note on Mr. Crews behalf; Don't hesitate sending "EVERYONE" letters, then enforce what you put into writing, otherwise you will remain ineffective in your duties.
Just remember that if you intend on going by the book when sending out letters, then enforce by the book!

My apologies; in my previous post, paragraph 1, 2nd. sentence, 10th word "instance" should have read "insistence".
(I guess some of the Union Star writing skills have rubbed off on me)
