Disappointed but not surprised

I read my copy of the Union Star and as hard as I tried to find it there was no ad in there for the Town Manager position. After last week's headlines I thought the town was moving ahead. Can anyone explain why the community was told the search was beginning, but nothing has happened?

Your question; does the town need to hire a "new" town manager?
Remember, the town doesn't HAVE an official town manager now, period!
Mr. Crews was only given "extra" duties. The Union Star was the first to dub him as "Interim Town Manager", not the Mayor or Council.
(the "Snowball Effect")

But then again, you never know what's coming around the corner next in the media???
(Story at 11, as they say.....)

anonymous is right, Mike Crews was never "officially" made acting town manager. If I remember correctly, he was given the authority to sign checks. There was also another specific duty he was given but I would have to go back to my paperwork to find out exactly what it was. I can assure you though, if you look at the minutes during the time frame that Bill Gillespie left the town as town manager you will find the exact motion, as made by Meg Tibbs. No where in her motion is it stated that Mr. Crews would become acting town manager or town manager. Of course, you will also never find in the minutes where Mike Crews was appointed by the council to the position of public works director, because it isn't there.

If what you're both saying is truth, and I haven't seen anything to make me doubt it, then why does the council continue to allow Mr. Crews to present himself as Interim Town Manager?

If he was only given extra duties, the why has it taken two years to replace him?

You know, I honestly can't answer that. Maybe their intent was to make him town manager or interim town manager, or something like that. But this has been brought to their attention so many times and they have never taken any action to correct it.

I guess it's like Champ Nowlin said, they live by Brookneal law. Go figure!

I will add that I find it strange that the motion Meg Tibbs made was so specific. I mean, they had appointed interim town managers before, why is it this time they chose to give mike crews "just" extra duties. It's not like they didn't know they had the athority to make him interim town manager.

My personal opinion is that Bill Gillespie was, and still is, the real town manager...behind the scenes. His contract even stated that he would perform adminstrative duties for the town. Sounds like a "closet town manager" to me. Maybe they knew Mike Crews couldn't really handle the job on his own.
