Police department

Why is there a petition going around to asking if we need to keep the police department?
Is the council going to disband it?

It would be stupid and irresponsible to remove our local police protection. It takes the county a long time to get down here and with the cuts that they are facing they aren't going to have the man-power.

Is this an employee issue, like last time, or is it really a budget problem?

Knowing how this town operates it means that someone on the council or the office staff got mad at someone in the police department and decided to get rid of the whole bunch.

Sounds like the same thing that happened to the town clerk.

I truly hope that this is a misunderstanding on someone's part. Ricky, Brian, and Scott have always been responsive and timely when I have needed assistance in the past. Brookneal needs to grow -- not shrink -- and disbanding the police force does not appear to be a step in the right direction towards making this happen. If there are areas that need to be cut, there are others that could and should be looked at -- however -- the police force is not one of those areas.

I understand that the powers that be are concerned over the budget. I know that this is real in this economy, and with many businesses backing out/going down, and Brookneal not pulling that tax revenue..it's tough.
However, we need our police department. Does ANYONE know how much drug traffic there is in Brookneal? Drugs are being dealt on Main street every week!! Helllo!
Now I HAVE experienced rediculous use of our police here, personally. I mean, I've been almost ticketed for dropping off my elderly mother-in-law at Food Lion! "Illegal Parking"? Give me a break, my car was running and I was still in "DRIVE" mode! GEEEZ!BUT...seriously, aside from THAT "pair" of instances, they do an excellent job, and the drug dog is a MUST!
There isn't enough for kids to do here and trouble-activities are of paramount concern, especially in the summertime.
I surely hope it is NOT an employee issue. I mean, really! Can't we just get along people? You are way past kinderagrten, we need to begin acting like adults!!!
