Elections

Looks like people are not happy with some of the town council and the mayor.
The general election will be in November.
All candidates running for council seats or the mayor's seat must have their declarations in by June 10th, 2008.
These council members are up for re-election:

Richard Adams
James "Champ" Nowlin
Stacey Hailey

Mayor Phyllis Campbell

If the elections were held this week, who would you vote for? Who wouldn't you vote for?
Who do you wish would run for the council's or mayor's seats?

Since I'm the one asking the question I'll bite the bullet and go first:

Richard Adams: I would not vote for him. He has sorely disappointed me. I cannot understand how someone with a police background could support having a felon in charge of a police department. He has publicly stated that he wants to see Mr. Crews as permanent town manager. He is also joined at the hip with Bill Gillispie and this proves he does not have the best interests of the town at heart.

James "Champ" Nowlin I'm torn here. I like Champ, but he comes off more and more as the mayor's puppet. He also supports keeping Mr. Crews as Town Manager. Yet, when Champ has stepped in as vice mayor and run meetings he is far more effective and professional than the mayor. I almost think he would be a good mayor, if the current mayor didn't hold sway over him.

Stacey Hailey: Mr. Hailey needs to be gone. Until he grows up and settles his personal issues, as well as learning that knocking women around is WRONG, he doesn't need to be on the council.

Mayor Phyllis Campbell: Let's see; employee lawsuits, convicted felon as town manager, disparate salaries for employees, illegal meetings, two worthless town managers that did nothing to better the town, favors for friends, threats against employees, abuses position to take revenge on people she doesn't like... the list could go on.

Who do I wish would run for council? Mark Wilkes, Billy Guthrie, Dennis L., Hope Epperson, Paul Francis, James Marstin, Joe Lunsford, and several others that I am sure would be embarassed if I put their names here.

I don't know who would be better to run the town. Personally, I think the town should just go back to the county, but that's just me.

I hadn't thought of Paul Francis. He knows the town and how everything works. I think he would be great, if he were willing to run.

I like a few of the others you have mentioned too.

I also agree that Hailey should not run again. He should have already stepped down. But arrogance goes before humility.

Wife beaters and felons running the town. It is indeed a sad, sad time for Brookneal.

i think all of the ones running this year need to be gone. there needs to be a clean sweep so the town can start fresh.
mr. gillispie needs to be gone to.
i think ken jennings would be a good mayor, but i don't think the mayer gets to vote, so i'd hate to lose him on the council.

i really think that some of the business owners need to step u and run. all of the stupid stuff that gets done ruins there business. if the town doesn't turn around soon we won't have any local stores left.

I won't vote for any of them. I'm going to right in my dog's name if no one runs against them.

egbbmI won't vote for a mayor that hires a three time felon for city council. Mickey Mouse comes to mind on election day.

Obviously being in TX I don't get to vote. I still have my opinions and don't mind voicint them. You dear reader can skip my entries if you wish. I say vote for the 47 yr old single white guy or what ever he/she really is. I've seen more positive input from him than I have anyone from the Mayors office or town council. I take that back, Stacy from the council posted some good stuff on another topic here. I continue to be bothered by the lack of input here from the council and Mayor. Have they been made aware this blog exists? Are they hiding? How about a public forum that addresses the (anonymous) issues brought up here and the office holders and seekers opinions on them? Can the mysterious Brookneal Blogger come up with something that will work? It seems obvious to me the Mayor needs to go as well as some of her cronies on the council but if the word does not get out on the streets about their record on the issues then nothing will change. I think most people are reasonable when presented with the 'facts'. They will make good choices come election day only if they know what their leaders are up to.
Good luck and God bless.

Get a PO box and register! (grin)
Where in Texas are you from? We lived in Whitewright before moving here.

Sometimes it take an outside perspective to see what is going on.

I don't think Stacey has posted here. I'm Tracy, and I post here and serve on the council. Unfortunately I'm cursed with an abnormal amount of bluntness and the inability to hide what I'm thinking. So I always say what is on my mind, even if it makes someone else mad. Can't help it, it's in my DNA.

>Have they been made aware this blog exists? Are they hiding?

From the comments they made at the budget meeting they are aware it exists. There were several comments about the "anonymous" posters. I don't care if anyone signs their names or not, I want to hear what people are concerned about.

>How about a public forum that addresses the (anonymous) issues brought up here and the office holders and seekers opinions on them?

I'm not sure what other type of forum can be used. There are only so many "letters to the editor" that can be written. They used to have election forums, but I don't know if they are doing it this year.

Election day will be interesting. I'm going to take a tack from my opponent last year and be there all day long, promoting some of the candidates.
