Next week's budget

I saw in the paper that the Brookneal budget will be discussed next week, I think on Thursday evening.

Do you think the council will go ahead and give the interim town manager the $67,000 he wants?

He threatened to step down if they didn't. Do you think he will?

Do you think the council should go ahead and advertise for the town manager position?

your kidding right? of course they are going to give him the money. there are only two council members that give a shit about the town. the rest are just pupets for the mayor

I wonder if anyone that can make a difference is bothering to even read what others think. It seems as though so many are willing to just let things go on as they have been. :(

I would hope that there is enough public outcry to prevent Mr. Crews from receiving $67,000 a year. That amount is absurd, even if he had a degree in something...anything!! For a town that claims to be in dire finacial straights they certainly don't seem to have a problem throwing good money after bad!!

Curious, how do you know Mr. Crews threatened to stepdown? Did he threaten to quit the town altogether or just step down from the town manager position? I say let him go! See how fast he's able to find another job that pays what he would be making just as public works director. Of course, rumor has it that Bill Gillespie would hire him in a heartbeat. Might be just a rumor, but I'd be interested to see if Mr. Gillespie follows through with it should the need arise.

For what it's worth, I do believe it's time that the town consider turning in its charter and reverting to the county. Honestly, if this is the best the town of Brookneal can find to run the place, I say throw in the towel!! As one councilmember so famously said "We operate under Brookneal law." Brookneal law just isn't cutting it anymore Mr. Nowlin. Maybe you should wake up and smell the coffee...or whatever else it is you must be drinking!! Pass the kool aid folks....

I read it. I read all the comments on WSET too. I have to agree with most of the comments regarding how this situation has been handled.
I think all the Brookneal employees need to be treated equally in regards to raises and insurance.

Ms. Meisenbach,

I'm sorry if my post implied that you do not read these comments or care about what's going on. It's obvious that you do! But, you seem to be the only one.

I will say, however, that I, for one, appreciate your willingness to stand up and speak up when you see something that is wrong. I'm sure that you have received strong criticizm from some that are in the "brookneal clique" for your publc stance on certain issues. Just remember, there are people out there that support you.

If only we could have more that were willing to do the same on council. Ahhh...one can dream....

you are kidding right, we can barely make ends meet and he wants that kid of money!! Can i have a job too? I don't have a degree but that dosn't matter he rides around on town gas, causes women to lose jobs, delt drugs in the past, what else can this man do? when is brookneal going to wake up? the town is suffering because of these people calling the shots. My water bill is crazy, please turn the town back over to the county we can hardly continue to pay the taxes or water bill, especially to give this kind of money to Mr. Crews. Let him step down who cares he can be replaced. maybe with some education too.The people who have the money have always had their way I think the all should step down, if they can't do any better than this. Why do you think brookneal never grew, it is terrible, nothing for our kids to stay here for . everything here is a joke, the town, the police, WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO ???? HELP

That is not true. I make a point of trying to make sure the employees get paid and have their benefits covered. I have stood up for their rights since I joined the council. I have been outvoted on several issues, but that doesn't mean I'm not trying to make sure our employees get paid above poverty level.

And yes I have taken a lot of abuse and criticism. Some of the "old guard" do not like to have their opinions questioned. Change seems to be hard to understand, even when it is in regards to federal laws that must be followed.

This is what is so frustrating about current events. Everyone knew about the situation, but when a few of the council members were constantly getting outvoted it prevents any change, and makes it look like the entire council supports the poor choices.

Ignoring community concerns and being nosy, unfriendly, snide and in some cases harrassing neighbors is exactly what makes the town unpleasant to live in. After seeing the methods employeed by the mayor, and her friends, to make people feel unwelcome, I am surprised that anyone would move here at all. People may get their rewards or punishments in the afterlife, but in the here and now they are destroying the town with their stupidity.
You are correct that what goes around comes around. Look at all the bullshit the mayor has pulled and look at the bad public opinion there is about her.
It's come around. Now is the time to do something about it.

You guys are a rowdy bunch. hard to believe such a small town could have so many problems. You're distracting me from my national political scene watching.

I say throw the bums out, reward the people that are trying to make a difference and get rid of the elitests.

The budget meeting is tonight, any bets as to whether Mr. Crews' raise will go through?

Anonymous said...

anyone heard yet did he get the raise?? Or do i even need to ask??
we'll know soon if he gets a new ride. Bet the vote was a land slide victory. that's just great BROOKNEAL has so much money saved up ,now would be the time to blow it!!!

From what I heard at the Skillet this morning three council members want to give him the raise, two don't and one is on the fence.

Supposedly mayor campbell talked about how "hurt" he had been by the publicity, but she sure hadn't cared when the nasty stuff she puts out has hurt anyone else.

For mr crews to talk about other people being immoral is a joke. He's made accusations against council members, yet he's the one that's screwing the tax payers.

Hang on a sec, doesn't the interim town manager have a bit of a history with law enforcement? And I don't mean working for them, either. Is that the sort of person that should be getting any money, let alone more money? I thought that not only couldn't felons vote, they couldn't hold a governmental office.

ROFLMAO!!! $67k for non degreed no experience weak resumed 3 time felon druggie! You gotta be yanking my chain. That's big money in an economically depressed town like Brookneal.

"He threatened to step down if they didn't. Do you think he will?"

Phhffft! Yeah right. He's gonna walk away from the gravy train and do what?

It looks like this blog is catching on, slowly. It does my heart to see more people on here posting their thoughts. Still waiting on the Mayor and council members to wade on in. Ms. Meissenbach (sp)? excepted. She has shown courage by stepping up and being active here. Bravo.

Gee should we add robber to this felon's list of crimes? If he wants to walk because he doesn't get a $67,000 let him. Good riddance to bad rubbish. I'm sure the town can find someone much more qualified and deserving of the salary than the bozo brains we have now.
