Elections

Read the Union Star today. Looks like Mr. Hailey is the only one that has submitted his paperwork. After reading the bios for him and Mr. Nowlin I have to ask "Doesn't anyone else want to run?"

Step up people and take back your town! If we don't get some council members voted in that want progress and financial stability then we might as well turn in the charter.

If you know of anyone willing to run, that has the integrity and brains to do the job then please get them up to the county office!

So, why don't you run? You are rather vocal about the town.
I have been approached, am a college graduate, reasonably intelligent (I had a teacher once who did not want to teach me because of my IQ), but why would I or anyone else want to get caught up in this mess, to be publically abused? It is damn if you do; damn if you don't. (Hasn't someone already used this expression in this blog?) Someone has alluded to the citizens have to work together and stop this bickering or we will get nowhere. Look at this blog, for example. Tracy takes issue with people being anonymous. Is that not a person's right? People who have responded are trashed, put down, made to feel like they are stupid for voicing their opinions. Again, the person's comment is highlighted/quoted < > and then told why that opinion is wrong, off course, invalid, whatever negative term you want to use.
I admire most of the council members because they have the guts to be on it. Unless people start working together, maybe going back into the county isn't such a bad idea.
I can see Hugh Rosser or Hugh Pendleton or Eddie Gunter or any of the supervisors putting up with some of this crap.

If I had a job that didn't send me all over the state I would run. I don't think it is fair to the citizens if a council member misses half the meetings a year, although it hasn't bothered a few of the council members to miss several meetings in a row.

Being anonymous is not a problem in itself. But being anonymous and using that anonimity to be a nasty jerk is another thing.
Plenty of people have voiced their opinions and not been trashed. I have also seen people mouth off and get someone else's opinions back in their face. It works both ways, if you're going to spout off, expect a reply in kind.

Highlighting a quote with a hashmark <> is a standard for net etiquette. It's used to show directly what is being replied to.

I watched Hugh Rosser, Hugh Pendleton and Eddie Gunter lie to the public about the toxic sludge issue. I attended both public hearings and it was very obvious that the county surpervisors were prepared to lie to the public from the moment they sat down.

Ya know, no one is forced to read this blog, or post on it. If someone posts, including me, they can expect responses, good or otherwise. It's the nature of the internet. If someone posts and doesn't think another person can rip into them then they are naive.

As for being a council member: It's an easy job for a person to do.
Obey the law and parlimentary procedures. Don't ask for favors for your friends. Treat all employees equally. Don't borrow town equipment. Don't expect special treatment because you're on the council.

A few times a year you may have to get out a calculator and help work on the budget. You should read up on grant processes and understand Robert's Rules of Order. When there are meetings, show up, unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Beyond the above there really isn't much to the job. It requires common sense more than anything. If people find being a council member a hardship then it's either because they aren't following the simple rules, or the people they are working with aren't following the simple rules. At that point it becomes a difficult job.

Brookneal Blogger,

I agree about the county supervisors. The sludge debate was a set up from the get go.

Thank goodness the council in Halifax had the cojones to put the ordinance in place in order to protect their citizens.

Stacey Hailey is running again?! That's too funny!

From WSET, June 4, 2008:

Council Member in Court

Brookneal Town Council member Stacey Hailey was in court Wednesday, facing charges of stalking and assault and battery against his estranged wife. Hailey is accused of victimizing his wife last summer after the two had separated.

Today Hailey admitted he hid in the bushes outside her home early one morning, to see her come home. The trial started Wednesday morning is expected to continue until Thursday.

This is the best Brookneal can come up with? He's hiding in the bushes for Gods sake! He's obviously got some serious mental health issues that need to be addressed. He's a convicted criminal...I guess that's the status quo in Brookneal though. Any more ex cons that need something to occupy their time? You have a few more days to register to run for council in Brookneal.

Sheesh!! Give me a break!
