Happy Holidays to Brookneal

The New Year is fast approaching. I'd like the readers to post what they'd like to see happen in Brookneal in the coming year.

What would you most like to see happen?

And what would you like to see stop happening?

I for one would love to see the town cleared of these run down buildings. They make the town appearance dismal and not very inviting for new business prospects. How can we attract new businesses when we look beat up and run down? Statistics may read that we are a poor population but we also have many folks who do have money to spend and may support businesses if they would just locate here. I love that old saying: "Build it and they will come". However, if we look like we can't even afford to fix our old sores, who would want to take a chance on Brookneal to set up shop?
I would LOVE to buy a vacant building on Main...I have one in mind, but it's scary when a few buildings down there are places all boarded up and run down. WHO owns these places anyway?

What I'd love to see STOP is all this pompous clickishness that I keep hearing about that is happening in our town government. It's great to be on board in a postition of authority but I think of these positions as SERVANTS of our town. Those who "serve" in these seats should not allow their positions to go to their heads and not work out through their hands. In other words, I observe that some councilmen/women love the limelight but wouldn't think of really working, much less working together.
This nonsense of not notifying everyone who needs to know things, is just insane. A house divided can not stand. That is what I see going on, clicks dividing our SMALL town so that it stagnates in stead of moves forward.
After all, this is NOT WASHINGTON and NOT HOLLYWOOD...so why don't we just cut the crap and see that we are "Brookneal", a very, very small town (and getting smaller due to some of this stuff) who desperately needs people to work together if it is EVER going to get stronger, built up and move forward.
One more thing, Don't these certain councilmen/women who are doing this know that people all over are on to what is going on? I would be embarrassed to go out in public if it were commonly known that I was perpetuating such underhanded and negative actions. After all, what is more important in public life than your reputation? It is something that, once it gets tarnished is very hard to be polished and restored to former luster! I want my epitaph/obit to read that I was an upstanding person who did my best and was fair and kind...not what I've been hearing and reading about now for far too long regarding some of our local "servants".

P.S. I meant "clique", that's what I get for not proofing!

I don't understand clicks, nor do I participate in them. There is simply no point in being a small town snob, because there is NOTHING to be snobbish about.

I do agree that it is hard to get the council to work together because even when things are pointed out that are absolute requirements by federal law you still get arguements.

The favoritism still exists and there are issues that have been voted on that have never been addressed at the management level.
We have external controls that don't do their job effectively, which makes it harder to impose internal controls.

Lack of communication starts at the highest level and trickles down through the office. I'm an email or phone call away at all times, as are most of the council members, yet half of us are never notified of meetings, problems within the office, problems with residents or anything else. We find out after the fact. My viewpoint on that is if someone wants to control all the segments of the town then they can accept responsibility for all the blame when something goes wrong.
It would be interesting if an outside audit was ever held to see who would accept responsibility if any mistakes were found.

I'm not allowed to make any decisions regarding the office, so it won't be me.

I'd like to see more council members participate here. So far we've had one council person, Ms Mesenbach actually answer questions and give us information.
There isn't any reason why we should not be able to contact the other council members by email, or have them post here.

Anonymous said...

Good evening to all who enter in. Knowing that this forum is no more trustworthy or honorable than those who participate, I will make every effort afforded me to be of a positive nature in all that I might say. Now, the "redneck" young lady says she is hoping to see participation from more councilpersons here other than Ms. Meisenbach. I'm not sure if this is the place, really,to air issues that one has to take an oath to even begin to with. Each month there is a specific day and time and place , set aside ,to do exactly that, which is attempted here. I do understand that the opportunity to speak unfettered by the bounds of parliamentary procedures gives way to some insights and ideas that might not ever reach the table in council chambers. There is a time and place for every thing, or so it is said. The new technology of computing , internet , "blogging" e-mail and other communication techniques that I have no knowledge of, does give way to another point from the "redneck girl". Maybe we could just sit at our computers and with web cameras and whatever, and have our council meetings "online".Many towns and cities do televise their meetings over the airwaves. More citizens get a "right there perspective" by watching at home. They hear word for word "who said what". Now, to the other statement made concerning Ms. Meisenbach giving actual answers and information of meetings, that can be taken two ways I'm afraid. Some might think it commendable , as I believe "redneck girl" intends, but others may see it as a breech of parliamentary etiquette, "talking out of school" or such. Not an accusation , mind you, just an observation. And lastly, remember, Ms. Meisenbach is one council member and it takes a majority of a quorum to do the towns official business. I do believe that every word she shares here is truthful. But it only serves to inform those , who, for whatever reason do not or can not attend the regular session of council. Also it allows others who have no official authority, to disseminate information in any interpretation they may deem appropriate. All this blabbing and bloggin I've gone thru here tonight proves only one thing. That being, that given the method(a computer online) and the time and impetus, anyone can make a statement that holds a little water. It does one some good I believe to "get it off your chest" at times. But alas, poor Yorick, it does no good down behind them closed council doors. Rock on 2009. Keep the faith. And party on Garth. #1 SOB

I'd like to remind you, that under the Freedom of Information Act all Brookneal business is open to the public, something that there have been attempts to squash in the past.

> I do understand that the opportunity to speak unfettered by the bounds of parliamentary procedures gives way to some insights and ideas that might not ever reach the table in council chambers.

There is far more that goes on behind the scenes with illegal meetings, threats against employees, poor management that costs the tax payers money and such. Perhaps we should just pull the proverbial carpet back over these things, as you are suggesting, and cover up the problems until they reach the point that the government steps in? Would that suit you? And you above statement shows that you lack even a rudimentary knowledge of parlimentary procedure. Such procedures, set forth in Rbert's Rules of Order involve VOTING. No one here votes to do anything. We discuss. Not only that, we discuss freely the things that concern this community, such as how the money gathered from taxes is spent.

>Many towns and cities do televise their meetings over the airwaves. More citizens get a "right there perspective" by watching at home. They hear word for word "who said what".

You're completely missing the point. Through much trial and error some of the council as learned how to behave at meetings, so the damaging things are no longer said where they end up in the paper. Instead they get said behind closed doors, where they effect the running of this town in adverse ways.

How interesting. So now we're not supposed to say anything to anyone except at a meeting. That's sure going to put a damper on those meeting down at the Golden Skillet that happen just about every morning, or the ones on the steps of the Methodist Church that occur every Sunday. Perhaps you can crawl out of your anonymous hole and go rebuke those people in public, since we don't all get breakfast at the skillet or attend the Methodist Church.
Did I wake up and suddenly find myself in communist China? There is no talking out of school since EVERY record held by this town, with the exception of Personnel records, are open to the public. And even the Personnel records that pertain to payroll and such can be viewed.

>Not an accusation , mind you, just an observation. And lastly, remember, Ms. Meisenbach is one council member and it takes a majority of a quorum to do the towns official business. An informed public is one that can build a better community. If you shut off the lines of communication you stymie progress, which of course is what certain sections of this town want. I'd far rather speak out in the open here, then be a part of the back door phone tree that spreads rumors and innuendos, as well as violates federal law about conducting town business via phone polling.

Anonymous,

Looks like another one of Mayor Campbell's secret service people has shown up to squash free speech.

Why am I not surprised?

Brookneal Blogger said...

Looks like we have another person popping up and wanting us to stay silent.
From the ISP they used on their visit I know why. Really people, why do you not just tell your puppet master to step up and post on her own? Don't you get tired of being manipulated?

I, for one, am glad we have at least one council member bold enough to post here and provide information, as well as weather the insults that have been directed at her, mostly by the above mentioned crew.
I have seen nothing posted here that wasn't public information, with the exception of the description of Mr. Hailey's blow up, which Ms Meisenbach did not provide, it was posted by another reader.

Anonymous, your post has served at least one purpose, besides telling me that the Underground Marionette Show is still working. It has told me that this blog serves a verey necessary purpose and that some of the council, and town officials, fear it. So I'm going to make every effort to keep it going, even if only two people read it.

Anonymous said...

In one sentiment this blog addresses the hope of more participation from others. And then when one "pops" up, you and the consensus attack like pirahna. But have no fear, even with insinuations of your ISP knowledge , and I personally believe that that may be the only knowledge you have , for you seemingly miss completely the point I tried to make. But such is usually the way of all closed minded individuals, who only criticize others and never consider another perspective and the possibility that somewhere along the line you swallowed enough crap spouted here by biased bloggers that now the only perspective you relate to is wrongly based. As to manipulation , it seems that you , "oh great bloggermeister" feel the need to ride roughshod over any opinion that disagrees with your own self-appointed "council" of bellyachers. As to an Underground Marionette Show , I most certainly am as far from being influenced by anyone other than my own conscience as one could be. This is concrete evidence to me that your crystal ball has let you down once again. And by the way, I never said anything to give any impression that I want to see anyone "stay silent". The foam from your raving lips must have gotten in your already blinded eyes. The "purpose" of this blog has no significance , as that was lost among the rant long ago. I must admit, it is rather fun to read and realize, just how misinformed some townsfolk are, but heh! that's how all this started. Oh well , just another round gone down. One day I hope we get to converse face to face. Meanwhile , please be kind to puppies and little kids. I got a feeling you might not be.

The point of your first rant was to accuse any council member that spoke here of "talking out of school".
The purpose of your second rant was to try to cover up the fact that once again the puppeteer's minions have been discovered.

>I must admit, it is rather fun to read and realize, just how misinformed some townsfolk are, but heh! that's how all this started

Since most of the information comes right out of the town office then that says a lot about the people ruling... er governing this town, doesn't it.

Good job bringing people together and please don't post my ISP as that really does show the type of person you are.

If you know then post it. Who am I. Either put up or shut up.

I'm not the one telling people to be silent about the administration of this town.

The ISP wass posted at your request, since you basically challenged me to prove I had the information. If you're going to come here and start a pissing contest then be prepared for people to take you up on it.

By the way, how do you manage to walk around with all those strings on you?

Because people call me and tell me what they heard at the Skillet or the church, just dying to spread the gossip. I don't request the info, it simply shows up.

And as other posters here have pointed out, the group out the Skillet talks all the time, and about every topic.

Do you really think this blog serves any purpose to better the town. I only wish someone without the same tactics as the controling council had a blog without attacking someone that thinks differently than he does.
It also served no purpose whatsoever to post someones ISP info because he took it as a challenge which if you read the post, it was not. You really do come off as a nut.
No friendship, no blood relationship, no one is above legal high ground. I am not about to lie or break the law to serve ANYONE on the council. The fact that you think such a course of action is okay shows how morally corrupt you are.

I don't play favorites. I abide by the legal requirements of state and federal code and I always will. If that means that some of my co-council members don't think I'm being friendly then too bad.

And no one has edited or paraphrased my posts. They go in just like I write them. So your implication that they are altered is a flat out lie.

You acted like "speaking out of school" was such a crime, but then you advocate turning a blind eye t legal and moral matters, just to be friends with other council members.

We don't elect "friends" we electe people that will serve the community and that means abiding by the law.
